Lean Six Sigma Tools for OEHS Professionals

Lean Six Sigma is a powerful framework for improving occupational and environmental health and safety performance by combining Lean principles that eliminate waste and improve efficiency with Six Sigma methods that reduce variation and support data-driven decision-making. When applied to Occupational and Environmental Health and Safety (OEHS) programs, Lean Six Sigma helps organizations systematically identify hazards, reduce risk to levels as low as reasonably practicable, and align safety initiatives with business objectives.

This professional development course introduces practical Lean Six Sigma tools that can be applied to both new and existing OEHS programs and projects. Through real-world case studies, participants will learn how to calculate and communicate key performance indicators, develop business cases for health and safety initiatives, prioritize risk reduction opportunities using A3 methodology, and select the best solutions among competing alternatives. The course integrates engineering, risk management, and business improvement concepts into a practical framework developed by OEHS professionals for OEHS professionals.

Georgi Popov, Ph.D., CSP, QEP, SMP, ARM, CMC, FASSP, FAIHA, is a professor in the Occupational Risk and Safety Sciences Department at the University of Central Missouri. He is coauthor of Assessing and Managing Risk – An ERM Perspective; Risk Management Tools for Safety Professionals; and Risk Assessment – A Practical Guide to Assessing Operational Risk. Popov holds a Ph.D. from the National Scientific Board, an M.S. in Nuclear Physics from Defense University in Bulgaria, and a post-graduate certification in environmental air quality. He graduated from the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College, Fort Leavenworth, KS.
