Spring PDC, Symposium & Annual General meeting (AGM) 2025

Spring 2025 PDC, Symposium and AGM

March 4 and 5, 2025

Please join us for our 2025 Annual Spring PDC, Symposium and AGM at the Courtyard Calgary Airport, located at  2500 48 Ave NE, Calgary, AB T3J 4V8.

Our 2-day event will be a conference hybrid style format, with exciting talks from various speakers. The in-person events will offer both learning and networking opportunities, with a live broadcast of all events made available to those unable to attend in person.

March 4th, 2025 (8 am to 4 pm): Professional Development Course (PDC)

This year’s format will be split over two presentations and offers members a chance to participate in learning and networking opportunities, as well as earn points toward certification maintenance.

March 4th, 2025 (5 pm to 9 pm): AIHA-AB Social – Location TBD

We will be hosting a social right after the PDC – location is still in the works. This is open to all members of the AIHA, even if you are unable to attend during the day.  Stay for appetizers and drinks!

March 5th, 2025 (8 am to 12 pm): Symposium

Our symposium offers members a chance to hear from industry peers and service providers on emerging research, and updates in the Alberta OHS realm.

March 5th, 2025 (1pm to 4 pm): Annual General Meeting (AGM)

Our annual AGM provides members with an update from the executive board, elections, nominations, and other items applicable to the AIHA AB local Section.

2025 CALL FOR NOMINATIONS

Want to get involved with the Alberta Local Section? Want some free professional development opportunities? Here is your opportunity!

The Alberta Local Section of the AIHA is seeking nominations for the following executive positions:

  • President-Elect (1-year term that transitions into the President role. For this role, you must be the AIHA National member)
  • Treasurer (2 year term)
  • Public Relations Director (2 year term)

These positions will be elected at the 2025 Annual General Meeting (AGM).
Benefits include CM points for certifications and the ability to attend symposiums and education sessions sponsored by the Local Section free of charge. In addition, reasonable travel expenses to attend meetings can be covered.
Any member in good standing interested in serving in one of these positions is asked to complete/submit the Nominee Information Form online prior to the AGM.

  •  Contact any past or current executive member for more information.

2025 AWARD OF RECOGNITION NOMINATION

The AIHA – Alberta Section provides the opportunity for recognition of individuals who have contributed to advancing the occupational hygiene profession and/or Local Section. This award allows members of the Alberta Local Section to acknowledge our peers for going the extra mile.

The Alberta Local Section would like you to think about the contributions of your peers and nominate someone who has made a significant difference. Attached is a questionnaire that asks you to describe the contributions of that special person.

Award Criteria Suggestions:
Some examples of contributions that the Alberta Local Section recognizes:
  • Long-term service to the Local Section including the Executive;
  • Mentoring new entrants/professionals in the occupational hygiene field;
  • Educating/giving presentations about the field of occupational hygiene;
  • Enhancing the profession of occupational hygiene;
Note – a large number of years of service is not a mandatory criterion for award selection. The award is based on merit/contribution rather than purely years of service. Therefore, any local section member can be nominated and evaluated for their contributions.
Application Guidelines: 
  • Nominations must identify and explain the contribution the individual made;
  • You may nominate any Alberta Local Section member, other than yourself;
  • All nominations are treated equally and there are no “categories”;
  • The names of the nominator will be kept confidential;
  • The names of all nominees will be published;
  • The award will be presented at the 2025 Annual General Meeting.

Virtual Fall PDC 2024 – Welding Fumes by Mike Harris, PhD, CIH

Please join us for our 2024 Annual Fall Professional Devlopment Virtual Conference.

Keynote presentation: Welding Fumes

Speaker: Mike Harris, PhD, CIH

 Mike Harris received and earned his research Doctorate from Louisiana State University in 1979 and is the President of Hamlin & Harris, incorporated in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

In 2003, his book, “Welding Health and Safety: A Field Guide for the OEHS Professional” was selected as ‘Critic’s Choice’ for best non-committee AIHA publication.

His welding experience includes:

  • Teaching aircraft welding at the US Army Transportation School
  • Welding environmental test equipment for Ling Electronics
  • Welding aircraft drop tanks at Royal Industries
  • Welding pressure vessels for nuclear submarines at Aerojet General

Mike is also a Fellow of the AIHA and the 2014 recipient of the Donald E Cummings Award.

The keynote presentation will discuss, in-depth, the hazards of welding fumes and how to effectively control workers’ exposure.

The presentation will be provided to those in attendance after the PDC is complete.
